Ever lost capturing an important moment because the photograph that you took was out of focus? It’s not a particularly great feeling when that happens. Thankfully, we have a solution now.

Founded by Ren Ng 2006, Lytro manufactures a light field camera which allows you to — wait for it — change the focus of a photograph after you have taken it.

Time magazine has listed this camera in the best innovations of 2011. This camera has the capability of changing everything in the field of photography including color, intensity and even the direction of light. It looks like a mini-telescope and nothing like your regular point and shoot camera. It does it  sensors which capture the entire field of light in view instead of just a single plane of light. Ng calls these pictures the, “living pictures” because you can alter their parameters after having clicked them. For the more geeky among you, here’s the science behind how it works.

Ng started working on this technology after struggling to click a near-perfect smiling photograph of his friend’s daughter. The firm has since raised $50 million and is being described as a not just an innovator in technology, but one that is actually revolutionizing it.
