Haven’t you always wanted to have your house gate open up automatically for your car like it does in movies? You know, the first scene where the bad guy is being introduced, with all his fancy gadgets and flamboyant lifestyle. Sure you have.
Well, it’s science fiction no more. The technology to make it happen has hit the market, and yes, you don’t need millions of dollars at the bank to afford it.
How it works
Belkin has introduced a line of products called Wemo which allow consumers to control literally every electronic thing inside their house. TV? Stereo? Lights? Coffee machine? You name it and it can be remotely operated. How this works is with the help of WiFi enabled modular switches, these switches can be plugged into any electrical outlet and controlled via your smartphone.
What can you do with it?
There are currently two swichtes available for sale — a standard power switch and another that comes with a motion sensor. The power switch can be connected between any power socket and the device that you want to control remotely; once that’s done, you can use the iPhone app to turn the connected device on or off. The motion sensing switch can be used to setup automatic systems which get activated when someone is in the vicinity.
For instance, you can configure it to switch the lights on as you enter your house, and turn them off as you leave. Or make your music system play when you step in the living room. If you can think it, you can make Wemo do it.
Wait, that’s not all
Connect Wemo to the Internet and you’ve got a whole Universe of new ways in which you can use it. Wemo interacts with app called IFTTT (read how IFTTT works in detail), which means that you can make your favorite web services like Twitter, Facebook and Instagram among others communicate with motion sensing switches in your house.
Imagine all the things that you can do by combining these two — you can, for instance, set IFTTT to send you an email if there’s a burglar in your house. Currently, Belkin has only published the iPhone app, but Android shouldn’t be far behind considering the drool appeal that Wemo has.
